Umar Ishaque, M.P.H., O.D.
Dr. Umar Ishaque is a driving force behind U & M Family Eyecare. Dr. Ishaque is a native of Montreal, Quebec, Canada but proudly makes his home in Duluth, Georgia with his wife Dr. Mumtaz Bashir, and his four children.
Dr. Ishaque attended McGill University, (Montreal, Quebec) where he majored in Physiology. He then attended Tulane University, New Orleans, LA where he obtained a Masters in Public Health. He then attended Indiana University School of Optometry where he excelled in ocular disease. After graduation Dr. Ishaque moved to Georgia and started up the practice he still works at. Dr. Ishaque is a member in good standing with the Georgia Optometric association and the American Optometric Association.
Dr. Ishaque is honored to be entrusted with the visual health of the citizens of Georgia and practices with the philosophy that every patient needs to be treated with the best eye experience they have ever had.
Dr. Ishaque is fluent in Punjabi and French. His hobbies include home renovations, traveling, movies and most importantly spending as much free-time as possible with his family.
Mumtaz Bashir, O.D.
Dr. Mumtaz Bashir is a founding member of our practice. She graduated from the Illinois College of Optometry with a Doctorate of Optometry degree in 2000. Dr. Bashir grew up in California where she graduated with honors at the University of California and has a double Bachelors Degree in Pyschobiology and Vision Sciences. She has been trained in the diagnosis, management and treatment of conditions and diseases of the human eye and visual system. She has extensive experience in refractive surgery, pediatrics, specialty contact lenses and primary care optometry.
Dr. Bashir moved to Atlanta in 2001 where she resides currently with her husband, Dr. Ishaque, and 4 children. In her spare time Dr. Bashir enjoys cooking, reading and spending time with her family and friends.
Seung Sarah Shin, O.D.
Dr. Seung Sarah Shin was born in Seoul, Korea and came to United States when she was twelve after living in Argentina for a few years. She graduated with Cum Laude from The College of New Jersey in Biology and obtained a Doctor of Optometry Degree from State University of New York. After an internship at the Veterans Hospital in Newport, New York she interned at the Omni Eye Center in Atlanta, GA.
Since moving to Georgia, Dr. Shin entered into a practice where she is therapeutically certified to diagnose and treat eye diseases as well as primary care optometry. She is a board certified optometrist specializing in Low Vision. Dr. Shin has been the catalyst for the addition of a Low Vision Clinic to our practice. Low vision care is offered to patients who have vision loss that cannot be corrected by ordinary glasses, medication, or surgery.
Dr. Shin serves as a member of various community and Optometric organizations including the Georgia Optometric Association. She is fluent in Korean and Spanish and enjoys running in her spare time. She also volunteers in various organizations including Fellowship of Christian Optometrists. She has repeatedly gone on optometric mission trips providing free eye exams and vision care in undeveloped countries.
Naheed Ahmad, O.D.
Dr. Ahmad has been practicing for over 25 years total and the last 17 in Atlanta, Georgia. Dr. Ahmad grew up in Montreal, Canada where she completed an undergraduate degree in Microbiology and Immunology. She earned her Optometry degree at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada before moving to the United States. Dr. Ahmad presided as co-president of the International Optometric Honor’s Fraternity at the University. Dr. Ahmad has been a presenter at SECO (South Eastern Conference of Optometry) in 2006 and 2007, as well as at AOA (American Optometric Association) in 2009 National Meeting and at the GOA (Georgia Optometric Association) annual meeting in 2008.
Dr. Ahmad also been a lecturer for Alcon and Bausch and Lomb and on the editorial panel for Women of Optometry. She is presently on the Advisory panel for Wal-Mart Optometrists as well as on the Board of the national association Energyeyes, which represents corporate affiliated optometrists in North America.
Dr. Ahmad completed internships in Ocular Pathology, Vision Therapy, and Specialty Contact Lens Fittings. Dr. Ahmad is Board Certified at the National and State levels in the diagnosis and treatment of ocular disease. Dr. Ahmad has extensive experience in family eye care, including, pediatric eye examination, contact lens fitting, eye surgery co-management and adult eye care. Dr. Ahmad’s training and experience also allow her to diagnose, treat, and manage all eye conditions. She also takes pleasure in helping her patients avoid potential eye problems, and advising them about their options among glasses ans contact lenses.
In her spare time she enjoys reading, traveling and spending time with her 2 daughters.
Larrious E. Collins, Jr., O.D.
Dr. Larrious E. Collins Jr., a native of Monticello, MS, attended Alcorn State University, earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry. He continued his education at Indiana University School of Optometry in Bloomington, IN, earning his Doctorate degree in 2006. He has practiced in the Metro-Atlanta area since 2006.
Dr. Collins has extensive experience in family eye care, including, pediatric eye examination, contact lens fitting, eye surgery co-management and adult eyecare. Dr. Collins’ training and experience also allow him to diagnose, treat, and manage all eye conditions. He also takes pleasure in helping his patients avoid potential eye problems, and advising them about their options among glasses.
In his free time, Dr. Collins enjoys spending time traveling with his wife and children. He enjoys sports and movies in his spare time.
Mohammad K. Islam, O.D.
Dr. Islam joined U& M Family Eyecare in 2003 after obtaining his Doctorate degree from the University Of Alabama School Of Optometry. He also obtained his B.S. degree in Biology Magna Cum Laude from UAB as well. There, he was selected one of the two most outstanding international students in the academic category. His academic achievements also include recognition by the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, and a certificate of excellence presented to him in 1995.
Dr. Islam has training in primary care optometry, managing and treating ocular injuries and diseases, fitting contact lenses, low vision rehabilitation, and vision therapy. He has interned in the VA Hospital and Vision America of Birmingham, a multi-specialty ophthalmology practice.
Dr. Islam is a member of the Georgia Optometric Association and American Optometric Association. He enjoys reading, collecting books, soccer and spending time with his wife and family.
Maria-Theresia Nguyen, O.D.
Dr. Nguyen was born in Vienna, Austria and moved to Lawrenceville, Georgia at the age of thirteen. While pursuing her bachelor’s degree in Biology at the University of Georgia, she worked at U&M Family Eyecare as an optometric technician where she found her passion for the profession and love of patient care. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia and moved on to obtain her Doctor of Optometry degree at the University of Alabama at Birmingham during which time she was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society and National Optometric Student Association
Dr. Nguyen is a board certified optometrist experienced in primary eyecare, ocular disease, contact lenses, and pediatric optometry. She is a member of the American Optometric Association and Georgia Optometric Association. She speaks English, German, and Vietnamese fluently. In her spare time, she enjoys classical music, hiking, and spending time with her husband, family and friends.
Dr. Nguyen is happy and honored to be back at U&M Family Eyecare doing what she loves.
