Learn about Myopia

What is Myopia?

Myopia, commonly known as nearsightedness, is a vision condition where close objects appear clear, but distant objects become blurry. This happens when the eye is longer than normal, or the cornea is too curved, causing light to focus in front of the retina instead of directly on it. Dr. Bashir and Dr. Nguyen, our certified optometrists at U&M Family Eyecare, has treated countless cases of myopia and offers personalized care to ensure the best possible vision correction for each patient. Myopia can be managed effectively with glasses, contact lenses, or more advanced treatments.

What causes myopia?

Myopia develops when the shape of the eye prevents light from focusing directly on the retina. It is often inherited, so children with parents who are nearsighted are more likely to develop it. Environmental factors, such as spending long periods doing close-up activities like reading or using digital screens, can also contribute. We emphasizes early diagnosis and treatment, especially in children, to manage myopia and prevent it from worsening as they grow.

How do we treat myopia?

We are one of the few offices that specializes in treating myopia, particularly in children. She offers a range of treatments tailored to slow down the progression of myopia, including prescription eye drops and specially designed contact lenses, such as orthokeratology lenses that are worn overnight. These treatments have been shown to be effective in managing childhood myopia. With her certification and extensive experience in treating myopia, We ensure that each treatment is customized to meet the individual needs of every patient, providing the best care for their visual health.
